Banks named C&D President

SEAFORD, DE

Chesapeake and Delaware LLC is pleased to announce the election of Cathrin Banks as President of the Company and subsidiary Railroads, effective May 1, 2025.

Ms. Banks is a founding partner of Chesapeake and Delaware. She served as Vice President and General Counsel from the company’s formation in 2017 until being elevated to Executive Vice President and General Counsel in 2023.

Ms. Banks succeeds Kean Burenga, who served as President of Chesapeake and Delaware and its Railroads since 2017. Mr. Burenga is also a managing partner of the holding company and will continue to manage capital projects for its Railroads. He is President of affiliates Belvidere & Delaware River Railway and Black River & Western Railroad.

“I could not be more pleased with timing of this transition,” said Burenga, “and I look forward to working to support Cathrin and the Railroads for many more years.”

Cathrin Banks earned her B.A. and J.D. from the University of Maryland, and is admitted to the Maryland Bar and the District of Columbia Bar. After several years as a trial lawyer, Ms. Banks joined The Maryland and Delaware Railroad Company (MDDE), where she served as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel from 2015 to 2019, and President and General Counsel from 2019 to April 2025.

She is a member of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) Board of Directors, the B&O Railroad Museum Board of Directors, and the League of Railway Women.

“I am honored and energized to take on the role of President at Chesapeake & Delaware,” Banks said. “Our location in the country’s most densely populated region gives us a unique chance to make an impact in one of the nation’s most dynamic freight markets. We will continue to focus on running a safe, reliable operation, providing top-notch service to our customers, and being a strong partner to the communities we serve across New Jersey. I’m looking forward to working alongside our talented team of railroaders as we build on what we’ve accomplished, while embracing new opportunities to grow, evolve, and deliver for the future.”
