Getting Started Shipping by Rail

We understand that shipping by rail has a bit of a learning curve, but we’re here to make it easy.

How do you order railcars? How long will they take to arrive? How much product can a railcar hold? How much does it cost to ship a container by rail?

The most important details we’ll need to know are:
- The commodity
- The volume of product to be shipped (in tons)
- The origin and destination of the shipment
- If the business is short-term, long-term, or seasonal
- The party responsible for paying the freight

With this information Chesapeake & Delaware, LLC works end to end with our Class-1 railroad partners to connect you with the right contacts and tools to ship by rail.

Items We Ship

  • Our team has decades of experience moving bulk grains for the poultry industry, the egg industry and the import/export grain markets. Feed mills in the beef industry and food processors utilizing bulk grains are some examples of customers we’ve worked with.

  • Our railroad supports producers and receivers of fertilizer, plastic compounds, energy companies and other manufacturers. C&D delivers top-notch quality rail service and supports inbound and outbound chemical shipments across New Jersey.

  • C&D understands the complexities and the specific production and inventory needs of lumber and log-pole customers across New Jersey. Our team has partnerships with lumber shippers across the US and provides solutions to customers with transload and offloading needs.

  • Situated throughout the State of New Jersey, our railroads are located within one of the biggest food markets in the United States. Whether we are transporting packaged products, perishables in refrigerated boxcars, or starch in hopper cars, C&D provides versatile solutions for food production, processing and distribution industries.

  • Based in New Jersey, our railroads are within one of the country’s largest origins of scrap metals and municipal solid waste. Rail has been the most accessible way to move bulk minerals, waste and other construction products efficiently.

  • Whether it is large machinery or electric equipment, C&D has experience to safely get your products from origin to destination. Dimensional load movements are subject to height and weight restrictions set by both C&D and Class I railroad partners.

Chesapeake and Delaware, LLC is committed to being a responsible steward of the environment, working to protect it for our own well being and for the well being of future generations.

On average, railroads are four times more fuel efficient than trucks, which means that shipping goods by rail reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 75% per shipment when compared to moving the same goods by truck.

A single freight train can carry the same amount of freight as more than 350 trucks, equivalent to removing 1,100 vehicles from our country’s overcrowded highway system. If just 5 percent of the freight that moves by truck moved by rail instead, the national fuel savings would total approximately 800 million gallons per year.
